Alibre Design Back At $99

Alibre recently rebranded its entry level MCAD product. Alibre Design Standard is now Alibre Design Personal Edition and is priced at $99. Also you no longer need to purchase maintenance. So the final price of a license is $99 only.

Easily the largest criticism of Alibre Design is that it cannot do much. This was further compounded by noises coming from Alibre itself, such as the infamous "get 80% of the functionality for 20% of the price". Personally, I am glad that the company has mo… Continue

The Alibre Design Development Cycle

I spent some time with Ashok Srinivasan, Alibre's Vice President of Development, to know more about how Alibre goes about developing its product. Before joining Alibre, Ashok worked on the development teams of a number of MCAD systems including Solid Edge and Unigraphics, now NX.

Deelip: Many people have been wondering what kind of a company Alibre is? I mean, is it a tiny outfit that outsources all development to some place like Russia or India. Stuff like that.

Paul Grayson on Pay for Play

I asked Paul Grayson if he wanted to comment on the discussion on my post titled "Paul Grayson on the CAD Media" about his comments on pay for play. This is what he had to say:
I do think I may have inadvertently “tarred” all CAD journalists with the same brush, which was not my intent. There are definitely a few publications I can name outright, such as Design News, Cadalyst and Machine Design that have never as

Max Freeman on the Cloud

I asked Max Freeman, Alibre's Vice President of Marketing, about his views on CAD on the cloud.

Deelip: Cloud. I don't think I need to say anything more. ;-)

Max: Yeah, the cloud. I guess I should start by saying that Alibre Cloud 2012 is already in the works due to the extreme demand from people for this kind of thing (laughs). Obviously that is a joke. But seriously, the cloud is something that has been overblown by some people who are touting it as their te… Continue

Max, I use Solidworks effectively. I think you are etirely correct that the Solidworks customers will hate the paradigm shift of Solidworks on the cloud. I am trying Alibre Design for some of my models. It is a considerable step down for parts with…

Just wanted to find out if anyone has used Alibre in the piping/pressure vessel industry and how much success they've had with it. My personal experience as far as using the demo has been mixed, especially getting things to fit in assembly mode. Thi…

I think that Solidworks has lost all connection to their customers, and the decision makers have never used Solidworks. Design engineers want tools that work reliably. I would abandon Solidworks if it were not such an effective tool. I hope to see A…
